Shared Web Hosting

What is a Shared Web Hosting Account?
Shared hosting is where multiple web sites (www.anynme.com) are served off the same physical server. This saves each customer from purchasing their own expensive server, performing the setup and providing the appropriate environment. This is the most common method of hosting sites of small to medium size with light to moderate traffic.

Is Shared Hosting safe?
Yes. The information and data housed in your site is not accessible by any other site on thesame physical server.

However, web sites can easily be compromised if you use an unsafe password (dictionary word) or install scripts and allow them to get outdated. Keeping your scripts updated and changing your password using mixed alpha numeric characters is highly recommended.

Do you provide backup processing on your Shared Web Hosting accounts?
Yes. We backup the data on our servers each night and retain the backups for 14 days.

Although we do this free as part of the service, we do not guarantee data recovery, so we strongly recommend that you keep a remote backup of your files and data.

Also, a $10.00 restore fee will be charged each time a data restore is requested.

How do I manage my Shared Web Hosting Account?
You will be given access to the cPanel control panel for managing your account. cPanel provides an easy to use interface for performing a variety of functions such as email account setup, file management, script installation, accessing statistics, etc.

Customers signing up for Site Builder Deluxe, will also be able to manage their Web Site Design through a Site Builder Deluxe management interface.

Refer to our cPanel FAQ and cPanel x2 Tutorials for more information on cPanel.

Do you have Front Page Extensions?
Yes, we do offer Front Page extensions and is an option you can control in your cPanel.

Please note that using FTP can disable or corrupt the Front Page extensions. If this happens, you can remove and re-add the Front Page extensions to correct this problem.

What is bandwidth?
Bandwidth or Data Transfer is the amount of data moved between your site and the browsers of the customer's accessing your site.

Our packages have very generous bandwidth quotas and we currently do not have any customers going over bandwidth quotas on our shared hosting servers.

What Domain Names (extensions) do you support?
We support all domains, including foreign domains.

What is a Parked Domain?
A parked domain is a domain name that is 'parked' onto another domain. When the parked domain is used in your browser window, the website of the domain it is parked onto will come up, retaining the parked domain name in the browser address.

The number of parked domains allowed is determined by your package.

How do I change my account package?
If you wish to upgrade your package to another shared hosting package, you can do this within your Customer Control Center and follow these steps:

  • Click on the 'My Sites' tab on the top navigation
  • Click on 'My Packages' on the left hand navigation
  • Click on the package you wish to upgrade,
  • Select "change the Existing Base package Above to a NEW Base package"
  • Click continue.
  • If an upgrade is available to the Base Package, it will be shown. Select the package you wish to upgrade to and follow the prompts.

If the package you want to upgrade to is not displayed, please open a support ticket and we'll work with you on the details of the change.

Please note that if you wish to downgrade your package, you need to open a support ticket. Downgrades can cause a loss of data if you are using more resources than the package allows, therefore we have our technicians check those settings before doing a downgrade to avoid losing valuable data.

What is SSH?
SSH is similar to telnet, but it's more secure. It uses high level encryption and compression to make sure nobody can takeover or eavesdrop on your telnet session. Most hosts no longer allow Telnet for security reasons.

How do I request SSH access to my Shared Web Hosting Account?

For security reasons, we disable SSH by default on our shared servers, as most customers do not need it. They can perform most functions required through FTP and/or their cPanel.

To request SSH access, simply open a support ticket. A copy of photo identification may be required before SSH access is granted. Once SSH is enabled for your account, you will be responsible for any access and keeping a secure password.

How soon will my Shared Web Hosting Account be set up and ready to use?
You will receive an email confirming your order within a few minutes. Your hosting account will be setup within about 15 minutes or less in most cases. You will receive a second email with your account information, IP address, username and password. You can log into your cPanel to change the password and begin setting up your emails and start uploading your site. There will be instructions in your welcome email on how to view your account prior to propagation of your domain name.

Does Web HSP offer a 30 day money back guarantee?

Is suEXEC enabled on our Shared Web Servers?
Yes, suEXEC is enabled on all of our servers. The suEXEC feature provides Apache users the ability to run CGI and SSI programs under the user IDs different from the user ID of the calling web-server. Normally, when a CGI or SSI program executes, it runs as the same user who is running the web server. The benefit of suEXEC is added protectio for you in a shared server environment.

Is PHPsuEXEC enabled on your Shared Web Hosting servers?
Yes, PHPsuEXEC is enabled on most of our Shared Web Hosting Servers and on the server new accounts are going. We have a few older Shared Web Hosting servers that PHPsuEXEC is not enabled due to conflicts with the older Operating Systems. These servers should be upgraded to new hardware and Operating System by the end of January, 2006.

Does Web HSP limit the resource usage with Shared Web Hosting accounts?
Yes. In order to maintain the stability and performance for all customers sharing the same server, we do have policies in place to limit resource abuse on our servers.

System resource abuse is defined as any site whose traffic, programs and/or processes are using excessive amounts of system resources, such as cpu usage and memory, for example. Excessive amounts is defined as any amount that results in substantial degradation of server performance.

As a pro-active measure, Web HSP tracks site hits on a monthly basis. If we see that your site appears to be outgrowing a Shared Server, we will notify you in advance. Sometimes, however, resource usage is exceeded due to other circumstances. This would include things such as a large peak in traffic, a poorly configured script, mail bombing and other activities that cause the server performance to degrade.
Refer to our Terms and Conditions for Full Details.

What is Web HSP's Disk Quota Limit on email accounts on your Shared Servers?
Customers control the disk quota for their mail accounts in their cPanel. However, in order to maintain performance on our servers, our mail policy is that email accounts should not 100 mb as email accounts using large amounts of disk space can cause server performance issues when using Web Mail. Typically, a 10mb to 50 mb disk quota limit for each email account is adequate.

Does Web HSP offer eCommerce on their Shared Web Hosting servers?
Yes, cPanel includes osCommerce, which is a popular Shopping Cart. Although Web HSP does support the server configuration of osCommerce, we don't support the product itself. We recommend using the osCommerce website and forums for user support.

Or you can install your own shopping cart script if it does not require server level configuration. There are many shopping carts that can be installed that only require account level configuration. If you have a script you would like to install, please open a support ticket and ask our technicians if it is acceptable for a Shared Server account.

We also offer Site Builder Deluxe. Our Deluxe Plus pack comes with a shop page feature.

osCommerce and Site Builder Shop support many merchant gateways, including authorize.net. If you need a Merchant / Gateway account, we have partnered with e-onlinedata who offers a Merchant/Authorize.net account at competitive prices. Visit our eCommerce page for more details.

How do I move my current site to Web HSP?
Every situation is different, but generally, there are 4 basic steps in moving your site:

  • Select and order your new hosting package.
  • Move/Upload the contents of your current site to your new site.
  • Test the new site
  • Change the nameservers for your domain at the registrar where your domain is registered to our nameservers (provided in your welcome email).

Your site should propagate within 24-72 hours of the time you change your nameservers.

This process becomes a little more complex if you have an active database, such as a forum. In this case, you may want to reload your database and shut off the old one just before you switch over, then redirect your old site/forum to the new server in order to avoid getting your database out of sync.

Another tip is to check email on the old server using the IP address during propagation to avoid missing any email.

If you need assistance with a move, open a support ticket and ask our technicians for assistance. Although we may be able to assist you with the move, we cannot guarantee results, as some things may be out of our control.

How do I change my nameservers to Web HSP's name servers?
You will need to contact your registrar to change your nameservers. Most registrars provide you with a login so that you can manage your domain through their website. You can then login and change your nameservers to the ones we provided your in your welcome email.
